Snake Temperature Calculator (Basking & Cool Side)

This Snake Temperature Calculator gives typical basking and cool-side ranges based on your snake type. It helps you check whether your enclosure’s temperature gradient is within safe, recommended ranges and spot potential risks from temperatures that are too low or too high.

🐍 Common pet snake species 🌡️ Basking & cool-side ranges 🔍 Compare with your readings 💡 Educational, not a prescription

Check your snake’s ideal temperature gradient

Select your snake type and (optional) enter your current readings to see:

  • Recommended basking spot temperature
  • Recommended cool-side temperature range
  • How your current temperatures match these guidelines

Example

Adult ball python in a standard enclosure

  • Basking spot: 31–33 °C (88–91 °F)
  • Cool side: 24–27 °C (75–81 °F)
  • Much colder temps can affect digestion and immunity.
  • Much hotter temps may cause overheating or burns.
Important: Always measure temperature directly on the surface where your snake rests using reliable thermometers or probes. Overhead “room” thermometers can give misleading readings.

How to use your snake’s temperature recommendations

1. Check the full thermal gradient

Measure your basking spot, mid-enclosure, and cool side. Snakes rely on a temperature gradient, not a single temperature everywhere.

2. Adjust heating gradually

If temps are off, adjust the dimmer, bulb wattage, or thermostat in small steps. Wait a few hours and re-check before adjusting again.

3. Watch behavior, not just numbers

A good gradient lets your snake choose. If your snake glass-surfs, hugs one extreme, or avoids the basking area, temperatures may need adjustment.
